А unique documentary project, touching upon teenagers and youth empowerment, and addressing old politics, corruption, injustice and impunity of political elites in Ukraine.

Shut the fuck up is a co-production between Ukraine (DGTL RLGN) and France (East Roads Films), with European partners.

«Закрий рота!» / Shut the fuck up

The team of the Ukrainian documentary "Shut the fuck up!" has launched crowdfunding to support the project, about a 16-year-old anti-corruption activist.

Shut the fuck up is a full-length documentary directed by Crimea-born filmmaker Taisia Kutuzova about the battles of Serhiy Chaharov, who at 16 takes a stand against corruption and environmental damage in his little town near Kyiv, until one day he gets physically assaulted by a local politician

Serhiy Chaharov

Serhiy Chaharov, a shy boy aged 16, investigates and exposes corruption and environmental scandals in Hatne, his little town near Kyiv, until one day he gets attacked by the local deputy. Intoxicated by populism and years of corruption, old people call Serhiy an indiot, they say he's "mentally ill". One day, strangers detonate an explosive device in Serhiy's garden…

Three years later, Serhiy, who has turned 19, decides to run for office against the man who tried to make him shut up : to get revenge against those who use violence against activists in total impunity and to show that young people can go into politics and bring change. Will he be able to stop corruption and ecological damage in Hatne?

We are currently shooting the film, and it will last for a certain time because we want to capture on screen Serhiy's transformation from a shy boy to a responsible citizen. We did not receive the support of the State Cinema Agency, although our pitch was ranked in the top-5 projects with one of the highest scores in the competition.

But this situation will not stop us. Our Ukrainian production DGTL RLGN has increased its financial contribution to the project, and we are also launching a crowdfunding campaign to support the project, which can be joined by anyone.

"Shut the fuck up" is a creative documentary filmed over many years, showing Serhiy's journey from online protest to real politics.

Filmed over 3 years and still a work-in-progress, “Shut the fuck up!” won in 2020 the Baltic Sea Forum for Documentaries award in Riga and the East/West Talent Lab award at goEast Film Festival in Wiesbaden (Germany). Taisiia was the only Ukrainian filmmaker to receive in 2020 a development grant this year from the prestigious IDFA Bertha Fund in Amsterdam.

After she was illegally attacked while filming in October by plainclothes police officers, Taisiia Kutuzova and “Shut the fuck up!” received on the 10th of December the prestigious Human Rights Prize of the French Republic 2020, for her contribution to the struggle against impunity and politically motivated violence against civil society, and for the establishment of justice and fair rules in Ukraine.
Serhiy Chagarov is a Ukrainian anticipation of Greta Thunberg. Even before the Swedish activist made her first speech, Serhiy decided that he’d engage against corruption and environmental damage. He tells me often that he should first study and that adults should take the responsibility to ensure a comfortable life in the community. But it just doesn’t work in Ukraine! That’s why he had to act, despite being a teenager. He gathered his will in his fist and had the guts to run as a candidate for elections in his hometown with a team of honest people.

Hatne is expanding. High-rise buildings are growing like mushrooms, leaving no chance for local infrastructure, which is developing at the same rate. The local authorities ignore the problem, their greed overcomes common sense.

The sewerage is overloaded and one day its capacity is not sufficient. In the middle of the countryside, a lake of shit is created, or a lake of the greed of local officials - an absolute metaphor for the corruption that is created in the country.

Because the children who were just schoolkids during Maidan are now old enough to take the destiny of their country into their own hands!

This is why we call on you to financially support "Shut the fuck up!" with a donation, to allow this film to be made, and to show that it is impossible to silence those who have something to say very loudly.

WHY STFU NEEDS SUPPORT?

In October 2020, the Ukrainian State Film Agency decided to scandalously remove "Shut the fuck up!" from the list of winning projects of the 14th competition, without giving any explanation. "Shut the fuck up!" came 4th (on 12) in its category, and while the first 7 films received state funding, "Shut the fuck up" was blacklisted. Why?

Foreign partners are already on board: the help provided by our French, Dutch, German and Baltic supporters represents 20% of the budget and enables us to continue to work, but the unfair decision of the Ukrainian State Film Agency deprives us of 50% of our necessary budget!

We are confident that if the Ukrainian state cinema does not support a film like "Shut the fuck up!", the society and people can do it, because it is a crucially important film to give hope to the youth and to support a new rising generation that is ready to engage in the struggle against injustice and the lack of rule of law...

STFU asks Ukraine question: can you change your city and do something for the community when you’re only 20? When old politicians failed to reform the country, can young people do it?
Often Ukrainian documentaries can access international funding and co-productions if they are also provided with support at home. If international market participants understand that the rules are being violated and are uncertain in the Ukrainian system, the entire national film industry will suffer.
